Our Garden
We are proud of our beautiful gardens, whose exotic plants and ancient trees provide shelter for various birds and small wildlife. If you choose to sit on the patio and wait a while, you will often see one of these come by.
The grounds surrounding the house contain many rare and unusual specimen trees and shrubs, including a Giant California Redwood (Wellingtonia) and an Indian Bean Tree. Some of the trees were planted in Victorian times.
Beyond the garden lies the beautiful River Severn, where you may see swans, ducks, grey herons, or kingfishers. If you’re lucky, you may sight a water vole – very rare creatures.
Whether you’d like to sit in the woods at dusk, or you want to go fishing for dace, chub, brown trout, or seasonal salmon in the nearby River Severn, our idyllic location offers something for everyone.
Camping and Caravanning Club
Exclusive to Members Only
We are pleased to announce that we have now opened our Certified Camping and Caravanning site (CS), in our adjacent field. We hope this will create more space for families to get together between the campsite and a bit of luxury for those who prefer a BnB.
About Our History
Constructed around 1830, Bron Hafren is a large, detached period property. Its name means “a hill by the River Severn” in Welsh.
The house has an interesting history. Past residents include the Humphrey family, who later inherited the nearby Glansevern Gardens Country Estate, and John Davies Knatchbull Lloyd (JDK Lloyd) OBE, who was a contemporary of John Betjeman (Poet Laureate 1972-84) and Evelyn Waugh (author of ‘Brideshead Revisited’).
While at Trinity College Oxford, JDK Lloyd became a member of the infamous Hypocrites Club. He was a noted antiquarian and public servant, the former mayor of Montgomery, and author of numerous books and articles on archaeology and local history.
Since we took over Bron Hafren in September 2017, we have enjoyed redecorating the various rooms. After seeing birds in our garden, we named each bedroom after them – Kingfisher, Nuthatch, Woodpecker, Mallard, and Chaffinch. We also added our camping and caravanning site in September 2021. In April 2023 we added our self-catering Shepherd's hut with hot tub.
